The Dutch city of Amsterdam is to close one-third of the brothels in its famous red light district.
The city has reached a 25m euro (£18m) deal to buy many of the premises and turn them into shops or housing.
The mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen, said that although prostitution was legal in the Netherlands, there was too much of the sex trade in the city centre.
He also said that the trade involved exploitation and trafficking of women, and other kinds of criminal activity.
Pah.... there goes the neighbourhood. We'll have McDonalds and Starbucks moving in before we know it!
Though I was absolutely horrified when I read the title my unease was lightened when I read that there may be "housing" built there. Now to figure out how much it costs for a plane ticket....
Clipped to travelvine...
I really hope they don't "Starbucks it up". I've always enjoyed my time spent in the Wallen. It seems a pity to me to lose those windows. Though, the area could use some more housing and other shops.
