A octopus has caused havoc in his aquarium by performing juggling tricks using his fellow occupants, smashing rocks against the glass and turning off the power by shortcircuiting a lamp.

That is hilarious, cat. I knew octopus were intelligent, and this is further evidence. I think he needs a bigger tank and some other octopus company:-)

Otto kind of rules. That article is HILARIOUS! I can't decide if Otto is miserable or having the time of his life. I hope it's the second. I wonder if they've interviewed any of his aqua-roommates to see what their opinion of Otto is!

I would think he's the Aquarium-mate from Hell!

Ha! Yeah, Otto is kind of acting like the alcoholic roomate who blacks out and decides to empty all the kitchen cabinets onto the floor at 4 am. I hope he's at least on time with his bills!

Or maybe that's the reason he switches off the lights... he can't pay the electricity!

Why don't they turn off the light periodically and let the poor thing get some sleep?

Yes I'd say that Otto's caretakers have some explaining to do. Why is their octopus so upset!!

It is something though isn't it? How incredibly intelligent they are. Have you seen the experiments where they put octopus food (a live crab, I think...oh, well, life is rough in the real world) into a clear glass jar filled with water and believe it or not, the octopus is able to figure out it is supposed to unscrew the jar to get at the crap. Truly amazing.

Yeah, I've seen those kinds of programs. Also, there was a series on cephalopods that showed one octopus who carried a smoky glass bottle along with him, to hide in for protection and hunting purposes. The scientists placed a larger, clear glass bottle in his path, which he thoroughly investigated (you could see him evaluating the real estate), but he decided against it (too big to carry easily, too easy to see him through it), and carried on with his preferred home.

I think I want to get an octopus. I wonder how it and H.I. would get along...

Otto has personality plus! I agree they need to re-think the lighting situation. He obviously doesn't like it.

Maybe he just needs enough light to read by; maybe write some poetry, or that novel he knows he's got in him.

The short-circuit had baffled electricians as well as staff at the Sea Star Aquarium in Coburg, Germany, who decided to take shifts sleeping on the floor to find out what caused the mysterious blackouts.

...now that's devotion.

CartoonCat - NewsVine would be so boring if it weren't for your miscellaneous finds. :)

Otto needs to be freed.  I hate zoos.  Only if they are being treated for injury shoud an animal be held in captivity.

I tend to agree with you, since he's obviously bored with tank life. If he's been there long, tho, he may not be able to survive on his own. He definitely needs more to do, and more space.
