This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

WOW! I don't care what the child did, he didn't deserve that. That's scary. Parents assume that school is one of the places that is acceptable for a child to be but that is turning out not to be so.

Can't tell what the student did by the story. It lacks detail.

Wow... like I say: just when I think that "now I've heard everything" something like this pops up and I think there's just something wrong with people of the generation that's now teaching these kids. These kids are a generation younger than myself (I'm almost 40) and don't get me wrong, but I taught, and it never crossed my mind to kill one of my students!!

I am, as the Brits would say: gobsmacked! (astonished, flabbergasted, you name it, I am!)

There are some very unstable school teachers. I exposed one who was encouraing his class to torment one of the class members. In class, this second-grade child was being forced to put up with other students throwing his paperwork on the floor and ruining it, being kicked by other students, having his chair tipped over with him in it. Out in the school yard, the same students were beating him up. The teacher turned a blind eye to all this. If the child complained, he was punished for complaining.

When cornered (in front of school administrators), the teacher said the kids were doing it because they didn't know how to cope with "his disability." Since his "disability" was an invisible learning disorder, how did the students know he had one? The only way they would know is if the teacher told them. I immediately said, "Okay, then let's talk hate crimes because the disabled are protected under hate crime laws." Of course, I meant him, not the students who were too young to understand.

The child was removed from his class immediately, but nothing happened to the teacher. He was free to single out other children to be tortured.

I was a good student and quiet so teachers left me alone but there were a couple of kids who from day 1 the teachers decided they didn't like and would make dirisive comments about their work. They would get very sarcastic when the students didn't understand. This was in middle school so we were 11, 12 and 13. It just didn't strike me as a good way to encourage them to do better.

It's no secret to the other kids which ones have learning disabilities. The teacher didn't have to tell them. They know because they are aware what all the other students are capable of and because THEIR PARENTS gossip in front of them. It sounds like youi had it in for this teacher, period.

As you were not there, perhaps you should be less accusatory. My youngest son had the most irresponsible gym teacher last year; my son was being bullied and harassed by a gang of kids (the teacher's personal favorites, the sports stars) and the teacher would do nothing, even after repeated requests from my son and us for these actions to cease. After one of these little future-felons assaulted my son in front of the principle, small measures (a 10 day suspension) were finally taken but not enough to satisfy me, so I pulled my son out of the school. I can't imagine why they didn't think to call me when the assault occurred, I found out when my child came home from school with a black eye. After the months of conferencing, to say I was livid would be an understatement!

From the report which I posted earlier about this case, it seems the teacher had recently had a stroke due to stress and had only just returned to work. It would appear that this action was totally out of character and that he cracked. He had previously been a well liked teacher with many years of experience.

Sounds like a tragedy for everyone involved.

Poooorr Jack! That's just awful. At least he'll never have to work a day in his life. He'll be compensated with plenty of cash, if he lives through it.

This is the UK, mind you. He'll probably get a week's extra pocket money. Oh... and the detention the teacher should have given him for misbehaving, instead of whacking him round the head with a two pound weight.

Suspected motive? Form of attack? I'm in no way defending the action, but a little more info would be nice. Did I miss it?

It was in the article I linked earlier - at least until they took all the details down (presumably as he's now been charged). The teacher was unwell, having suffered a stress-related stroke. He'd had a disputer earlier with a pupil, where he'd over reacted to disobedience by kicking her bag. The class started singing: " Who's the psycho in the mirror"... then teacher flipped out and attacked...

The form of attack was hitting the boy on the head with a weight, used for measuring things in the school science lab.

There's a bit more information here:

Today the youngster was said to be be in a 'serious but stable condition' at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre with his family at his bedside.

He is thought to have intervened in a row between the teacher and a girl pupil just before the attack happened.

Police are also investigating claims that the class was singing an insulting song aimed at Mr Harvey just before the assault.

Yesterday Mr Harvey, the married father of two daughters who attend the same school, had recently returned to work at the school after being off with stress and was said to have been acting strangely in the weeks before the attack.

It certainly sounds like the teacher has incurred a permanent brain injury. Those nasty kids, singing an insult - is that an English custom? Little buggers.

The article fails to inform the readers. Without detailed information no judgment is possible. Because there were no witnesses, the teacher may get away with murder. No one will believe a 14-year old! I speak with authority because a similar thing happened to me in Italy. In my case, a Catholic University dean attacked me and broke my rib. I did not fight back because he was a priest and because my degree was at stake. There was no apology from the school and no appeal. I contacted the head of the Order to which the teacher belonged, and asked for compensation for hospital expenses. No way. The dean who was highly placed in Italian society, brought a witness who falsely testified against me. I was threatened with police and a lawsuit, lest I dropped my claim. I was pursued from country to country with police threats. To this day, I am vainly waiting for "Catholic" justice! I know by now, that Catholic justice is a myth! And I am certain that in the case of this boy the very same will happen. A false witness will be found, to accuse the boy of "trying to commit a murder on the teacher"! Mark my words: it will happen!

I should qualify what I have said above. In the Catholic Church justice happens only when God Himself does it! Otherwise, every evil is swept under the rug of confession, which is secret! This morning, I know no one of you will believe, I actually saw Jesus coming down across the sky. At first, I got sad at the thought that He was coming to end the world. But upon fully awaking, a thought came that perhaps He was coming to defend me, His friend. That is what I mean by justice among Catholics! Either God descends from heaven to defend the victim's right, or the victim's rights won't be defended while on earth!

Hey, in the good ol' days, cat, there was such a thing as a Remington revolver. You might actually see one on an episode of Remington Steele.

(OMG, if that was my son!!) I believe that some kids drive their teachers crazy. I think that being a teacher is a very stressing job too!! But to get to this point of anger... unnaceptable !!Teachers should have a weekly avaliation inside the school from a psychologist or a psychiatrist to share their profession problems and to check if they are psychologically well..

Fay, did you read the update provided? The man has had a brain injury - obviously the impulse control center of his brain is not working anymore. It's patently ridiculous to have teachers checked weekly by psychologists. Parents need to teach their nasty little offspring to act like decent human beings.
