This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

A second blow to the head caused the 26-year-old to suffer a fractured a skull. This second strike rendered the self-defence claim inadmissible by law

This is probably why we see more and more people not involving themselves in crimes they see occurring or trying to help the injured of such and accidents. Fear of being sued, or something as ridiculous as what happened to this 'good samaritan'.

I think there is something darker at work here. I think the system(ie the cops), dont want to be put in the negative light as being seen as impotent when it comes to preventing thugs from committing crimes in the first place. Our good samaritan just illustrated how broken the typical system is, so they target him to make him go away, rather than fix the problem.

I think the judge who had the gaul to put this guy in jail needs to have his skull fractured! There is something VERY wrong when the justice system is harsher on people defending themselves than the criminals committing the offenses. IMO if some guy is attacking some woman and gets his skull cracked, whether it's the first hit or the 10th the guy just got what he deserved.

To me this is all part of the whole system trying to make people depend on the government for EVERYTHING instead of dealing with their own problems. Half of what the government does nowadays is stuff that people have always had to deal with on their own, and should STILL be dealing with on their own. It makes me sick, especially since I'm a young man and I know it's only going to get worse over the next few decades.

Take a good look, thats were we are headed right here in America. It reminds me of the time A friend and I caught a ring of gangbangers in the act of ripping the wheels off a car in the Apartments where we lived. That was one incident in string of car burglaries over several months. There were 6 of them, five were holding up one corner at a time of a custom Volkswagon Beetle while the 6th was removing the wheel. My buddie pulled his pistol out and told them to stop.they didnt, instead they tossed the wheels into a canal ditch that was backing the parking lot and ran after them into it.They had escaped but what they didnt realize was that we had watched them from the time they pulled up in their truck so we knew they would be back.I let the air out of each of their tires to impede their getaway if they should return for the truck.I waited while my buddy went back to his place to call police. He came back after he called and we waited....and waited...and waited, finally the gangbangers came back and they had regrouped, some of them had sticks and one of them was yelling shoot them!I looked at my buddy and he at me,about a second or two to think it out and in unison we both said Run!We met up around the front of our building and went into his place.probably an hour after he called we saw a police cruiser pulling into the complex and we went out to meet it.By that time the owner of the car,now on its rotors was down inspecting the damage and trying to figure out how he'd get to work in the morning. The poor guy was pretty upset and explained he spent $2000 on the wheels and tires and the cop was asking him well, how much would you get if you say took them to the flea market and sold them for cash?In the meantime my buddy and I were relaying our story and over the radio we heard the cops had stopped a truck fitting the description we gave at a 7/11 down the street, the occupants were putting air in the tires at the pump.I told the officer that was them and I would gladly go and ID them.Instead they let them go.I became upset at this and I asked the officer why even bother taking my report then.At that point he threatened to arrest me for disorderly conduct.I left with my buddy and the poor car owner got his wheels and tires back with a few scratches and nicks from being thrown into the ditch. The car burgleries were still going on when I moved out of that place. That was Escondido CA in 1987.I wonder sometimes how bad it must be now.Not my problem,I live back in AZ now. That happens again, and I will shoot a few of the guys and get a commendation from the police. This kinder gentler world is bull@!$%#.

The criminals have more rights than the victims anymore. A guy can break into your home, hurt himself and sue you into bankruptcy even tho he was breaking the law. You better just lay down and take it like a complete pussy of a victim should or else.

Ok, I get it, the second blow fractured a skull, yea that's going a bit too far but still, a good Samaritan should be ok in this case. Self defense is not for kicking ass and beating people up, it's meant more for evasion. Stop someone from assaulting you so you can get away, but if someone else has a weapon or has the intent on hurting you severely, then there shouldn't be a problem in returning the intent to the attacker. You can even shoot to kill in your own home. Someone breaks in, kicks the door in holding a knife or other weapon, you go for your gun, you better shoot to maim and claim you were trying to stop the intruder because if you kill him it's murder even tho he was committing a crime. As far as I would be concerned it's one less jack-off costing the taxpayers millions a year in prison.

You cant even help someone out now. Even the victims are suing the people who help. There was that story several months ago about a woman who was trapped in a car accident, some guy stopped and helped her get out, the news and everyone else said this guy is a hero and the lady sued him.

in the military we are trained to do basic trauma aid you know tourniquette the whole deal and immediately told afterward that the only time we can use it is on another member of the armed forces because we can be sued for saving some civilian's life if they don't like the outcome. so yea it's not surprising this guy would save some lady from an assault only to be arrested for one himself

James, perhaps this particular perpetrator could have benefitted from a touniquette applied securely about the neck and held tightly in place for the requisite 15 minutes. Anyhow the good samaritan would have.

Well I count my self lucky in that Im not bound by duty in that way but there is a certain twisted logic that applies in this day of the lawyer and rampant regulation.I dont know that Id make a good soldier. Thanks to those who do and are.Service comes in many forms so do what you can and dont worry to much about the rest.

The neetest stuff on that order Ive seen so far has been in a series of articles from Shotgun News, they had a correspondent embedded with an outfit and he sent pictures of a surprisingly eclectic variety of firearms and knives as well.Including some of the cold war era Soviet stuff and plenty of State produced newer weapons.Odd markings and obscure origins, very strangely modified rifles.I could really dig some pics of what youve got any suggestions? The body armour sounds cool.Does it hold up to snuff with what your familiar with?Stories to match as well.If you want to share your experience,Im a damn good listener.

naw man it don't have the improved SAPPY plates in it. but it is a helluva lot more comfortable than my vest. the odd mods they showed were probly sniper rifles the locals use to take shots at us the other mods are probly just good old iraqi enginuity trying to keep the weapon from falling apart

the locals are just some of the coolest people you'll ever meet if they like you if they hate you then not so much and normally they couldn't even hit the truck when they took pot shots at us the enemy is very intelligent they know in a standing fight they wouldn't have a chance so they use all the guerilla tactics they can and if the U.S. were in the same situation we would too
