Many an exhausted mum has suspected her husband of pretending to be asleep when baby cries in the middle of the night.
But the man really is firmly in the Land of Nod, say researchers.
While a baby's sobbing is the number one sound most likely to wake up a woman, it doesn't even figure in the male top ten.
Car alarms, howling wind and a buzzing fly are the prime noises guaranteed to disturb a man's sleep.
The huge differences between the sexes were revealed by tests measuring subconscious brain activity.
It was established long ago that my snoring could drown out most noises.
studys have shown that a cat's cry is in the same frequency range as babies and they use it to get our attention, showing that men do respond to crying sounds, this survey is highly questionable since it was "sponsored" by a sleeping aid manufacturer,, their goal I suspect is to say women respond to babies even when doped up on cough and cold meds. which are mostly alcohol, and would likely cause a mother to sleep through her baby's crys.
They could have saved time and money - just contacted me....they have selective hearing and a baby crying at night automatically flips a switch in their brain to make them physically immobile, breath deeper and in other words damn good at playing possum!
They definitely don't hear words like "The lawn needs mowing..." but they are able to hear a packet of peanuts opening at 100 paces....
cartooncat, we call that selective hearing at my house. "I need you to (fill in the blank)" goes unheard, but "dinner's ready" or "the game's on" gets an immediate reaction!
I agree to all of that, just a little insulted by the suggestion that we men wouldn't hear and respond to a baby, of course we're gonna lay there if Momma is in the house. I'm just an Uncle, I'm not gonna get up unless I'm the one watching the baby, I would the same is true for all men..
Maybe I'm an odd man out but I can hear my child cry from sound sleep no problem.
He is going on six months old and sleeps in his own room now with a baby monitor. In fact I frequently wake up while my wife is still sound asleep.
Once I thought I heard him choking and went from dead asleep to jumping out of bed from prone to the door 4 ft away in one leap. I didn't know I could move that fast, fortunately a false alarm but it took an hour for the adrenaline to recede. She didn't wake up until I was already gone.
I concur. in fact, the hearing of the baby's cries are not related to men vs. women, but more towards how sound of a sleeper you are and what your primary concerns are.
in this case, the difference is that typically the mom's primary interest is adherring to the baby's needs, thus, her senses are heightened and aware, even as she sleeps. thus, she is always listening out for any sound that could be a wimper.
compared to typical men, their primary concern is the safety of their home/family. thus, they tend to react when they hear anything that could be a dangerous situation.
No, Kyle. You are by far not the only man. I think a majority may not hear it, but that is kind of a duh statement when a person ponders the biology behind it. I agree with Jaker though, the more sound sleeper a person is, the more that person will respond to stimuli.
My husband woke up when our son cried at night. (Let's not mention that I stumbled over him to get to our son because it was proven long before then that sleeping on the side of the bed away from the wall was dangerous to my health. LOL)
I can remember my husband jumping and clearing our room to the other side where the crib was when our son started coughing one night. He even kneed me in the side while I was jumping over him. It was probably very comical. It turned out that it was just a small cold that didn't even last 24 hours.
My husband never would hear our dog if she tried to wake him up in the middle of the night. I would hear her and wake up to let her out to tinkle.
And yet.... so often I'm woken by my husband stomping round the bedroom chasing a damn mosquito at 4 in the morning.....
You ladies just do your job and shut up.
with that attitude, the ladies and their babys will be sleeping far from you, so you wont be woken by anything, course you wont be able to wake your lady for booty call either, I think a lil' more respect than "shut up" is due, and I'm gay
Field Marshall, you don't think that the guy that helped get that baby there doesn't have any part of the "job" when it comes to taking care of him/her?
Gee, field marshall, with that attitude I bet you have the ladies fighting over you. If my husband was to ever tell me to "do my job and shut up", he'd find himself sleeping in a different house. You remind me of why I divorced my ex-husband.
