Terrified Tube commuters were forced to take cover as windows were smashed by a barrage of missiles at the height of the evening rush hour.

Eight Central line trains were attacked and windows were broken in the attack during the assault last night.

A driver on one train used the loudspeaker system to warn passengers to get away from the windows saying "there has been someone shooting at the trains with an air rifle."
