As part of io9's ongoing attempts to make you a hollow, timid shell of the person you used to be, we try to illuminate all the ways the world is trying to kill you. We've gone over death by asteroid, vampire, and virus, and have finally gotten to death by grocery list. Find out the toxic elements in all your favorite foods.

Well, now I'm rather sorry I read that... LOL!

Eventually we will either poison ourselves to death or starve ourselves to death trying to stay away from the foods that are trying to kill us all.
Sound more like the "eggs" hysteria when they told the people that eggs are good for you and all the people stopped eating eggs. Then when the egg industry started losing revenue (IRS money) then all of a sudden, eggs were great for you to eat.
They did this with many foods in the past, butter, eggs, breads, oils, etc...
Now that we are facing a low farming crop this year, all of a sudden all these foods are not healthy for one to consume.

Hey...not to worry. Everything in moderation. AND, don't keep potatoes too long. (Although it didn't say anything about sweet potatoes !!!)

Add to that list the imported foods, canned, packaged and fresh produce which contain harmful pesticides, somanella, filth, artificial coloring which the FDA tries to stop from coming into our country, and you may as well give up eating and just take vitamin and mineral supplements and your prescription medicines to try to survive on! OOOPHS! Most of those aren't good for you either, and being imported from who knows where, subject to who knows what regulations.
But then, we must be doing something right because we are living longer! Maybe it's exercise? Can we live on exercise alone?

Can we live on exercise alone?
Probably, as long as you don't breathe, because everyone knows how many pollutants are concentrated in our air.
What a silly article.

Everything will kill you eventually. Something quicker than others.
Don't cook meat on hot metal, its causes carcinogens to enter the meat. (I guess we should cook burgers on a stick?)
Don't drink the water for all the added chemicals are bad.
Don't breath the air...
Crazy! I'll keep eating what my body was designed to eat, breath the air and drink the water. For without these things, the body cannot survive at all.

based on all the crap these food nuts come up with, you have to wonder how humans have evolved for as long as we have. So what are we supposed to do, eat more of the fake crap found in pre-made foods? Is that a healthier choice? No it's not. I'll continue to eat my potatoes and all the other vegetables that grow naturally out of the ground.

I'm not that worried about these foods. Its the GMO stuff and the pesticides/herbicides all over fresh fruits and veggies that concern me far more. Always wash stuff off before eating, and rarely if ever eat a GMO.
And try to avoid processed and created crap, they are food like substances, not food.

Potatoes contain small amounts of a kind of chemical called solanines in their stems, leaves, and eyes.
Psst. You're not supposed to eat those parts.
As the spuds get older, they accumulate solanine, which turns them a green color.
If your potatoes are turning green, throw them out and buy fewer next time.
Every potato contains about 8-13 milligrams, and about 200 milligrams can make people sick.
I'll remember that next time I have the urge to eat 15-25 potatoes.
I'm guessing the article was written somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but I stopped reading there.

Shew, thanks for bringing me back! I was really worried that I would have to give up potatoes! But you have given me hope that they won't kill me as long as I remember not to eat the eyes! I guess that could go pretty much for any food though. Remember, no eyes! lol

Hmmm, how did my grandmother make it to almost 97 eating all these things?
I think you're right, Dennis!

No kidding, and that was in the days of poorer food-handling and storage.
I worked in a big chain restaurant way back in high school, and one of the things I learned was that proper storage and cooking gets rid of almost all of the stuff that's harmful to a human body and a healthy body deals pretty effectively with most of the rest of it.
I remember learning that the typical person consumes about six pounds of dirt a year.
Of course, my brother, who regularly ate garden worms as a child, probably consumed twice that. :)

Oh no...
No one likes me, every one hates me, I think I'll go out and eat worms!
LOL, your brother needed more protein?? :)

This list won't change my mind on any of the foods mentioned, and it sure as hell won't keep me from eating some dirty potatoes.

The only food item on that list than can "off" me is mushrooms because I am allergic to them. Others I don't care for but the ones I do on the list, I am not going to stop eating because 109 (whatever the hell that is) says so. When tomatoes were originally grown, they were thought to be poisonous and that turned out to be bs too.

Entertaining... but...
They could have provided some more suggestions on what to eat instead or how to curb the poisonous effects... like since potatoes are bad for you 'cause of chemical 'blah' only eat small red potatoes or something to that effect.
The kidney beans are moot in my opinion because anyone that makes them from dry has to soak them for at least 5 hours if not longer. Plus you have to boil or bake them for a long time to soften them up anyway.
I also think the blurb on Mushrooms is bogus because of the size difference. You'd have to eat a lot of mushrooms at one time to develop the same tumors as a mouse.
Rhubarb is only deadly in the leaves... I've never heard of anyone eating the leaves. It might be more important to note that a percentage of the population is allergic to Rhubarb anyway. Wouldn't want someone going 'Oh hey that's rhubarb... I can eat it as long as I don't eat the leaves..' and then their throat closes up.
Cashews... look if you can afford to eat a large enough amount of cashews to get sick you're either rich or work in a cashew factory in Thailand. Saying something is deadly isn't the same as saying something is deadly in large enough amounts. Water is deadly if you drink too much.

I found the article to be very humerous.
It just goes to show that too much of even good things can be bad for you. I think people are taking the article a bit too seriously, though.
